Sedgwick County hopes to attract, keep dentists

Concerned about the declining number of Kansas dentists, the Sedgwick County Commission has agreed to hire a consultant to determine the feasibility of launching a local residency program.

The program would offer an advanced degree to dental school graduates.

The study, by Triangle Associates of St. Louis, will cost $46,520 and be funded by the Kansas Health Foundation, United Way of the Plains, Delta Dental Foundation and the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund. It is scheduled to be finished by Dec. 31.

Kansas dental and health organizations have said that more than 80 percent of the state's counties do not have enough dentists to serve their residents, and the shortage will worsen as hundreds of dentists retire.

Health officials have said more dentists would work in Kansas if they could study here.
