Connecticut's gasoline recent increase in a state petroleum tax
"We believe this has been a major error on their part," GASDA executive director Michael Fox said this week, referring to the 16 percent hike in the petroleum products gross receipts tax that the General Assembly and Gov. M. Jodi Rell included in the 2005-06 state budget.
If state government needed more revenue for the transportation fund that pays for highway and bridge maintenance, it would have been better served with the flat gasoline tax hike Rell proposed back in February, Fox added.
The governor had proposed gradually increasing the gasoline tax consumers pay at the pump from 25 cents per gallon to 31 cents, with a series of small increases between 2005 and 2014.
The increases were proposed to help fund a $1.3 billion, 10-year program to upgrade Connecticut's transportation network.
